The 2021 Kia Sorento is all-new this year. While it carries over Kia’s unbeatable reliability and ownership experience, it now features an all-new design, more space, technologies and driving dynamics that make it a unique SUV meant to provide outstanding value.
Here, we compare the 2021 Kia Sorento with the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
The 2021 Kia Sorento offers much more bang for the buck
First, let’s talk value. The 2021 Kia Sorento can be yours for as little as $35,960. For this price, you get a great package that includes 3-rows of passenger seating, Kia’s renowned AWD system, a slew of standard safety systems and a standard 8” display audio screen, and fuel consumption ratings that go as low as 10.1 L/100 km in the city and 9.2 L/100 km on the highway.
The Grand Cherokee Laredo, which is the Cherokee’s base variant, is offered at a price that starts way higher than the Kia Sorento, at $43,124. And for this price, you get an outdated Pentastar V6 engine that guzzles 12.7 L/100 km in the city and 9.6 L/100 km on the highway, a smaller 7-inch infotainment screen and only two rows of seating.
For the same price as the Jeep Cherokee Laredo, you can get a fully loaded Sorento EX model powered by Kia’s state-of-the-art four-cylinder turbocharged engine that delivers 311 lb-ft of torque. This is much more responsive than the Cherokee’s V6, which only has 260 lb-ft. And despite this boost in torque, the Sorento keeps fuel consumption low, at only 11.1 L/100 km in the city and 8.4 L/100 km on the highway.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee does have more powerful variants. But you can end up spending as much as $103,000 for an SUV that is still technologically outdated compared to the 2021 Sorento.
The 2021 Kia Sorento deploys more space for cargo and passengers
The Kia Sorento has a standard third row so you can accommodate more passengers than the Jeep Grand Cherokee, but it also provides much more cargo space for your gear. With the second and third row down, the 2021 Sorento deploys a total 2,139 litres of space compared to 1,934 litres with the Jeep Cherokee. Behind the second row, the Kia Sorento can provide up to 1,274 litres of space. The Jeep maxes out at 1,028 litres in the same area.
